Arte

I was born into a culture of art, music, languages, history, and a desire to make a positive impact in the world. I grew up surrounded by my father's paintings, sculptures, and life philosophy. Inadvertently, like him, I have embraced being a 'renaissance woman' and eventually learned that there were no limits to creativity and beauty - or doing good. As I progressed through life, whether serving in the military, doing business, traveling, or teaching ethics, one thing has remained constant: be creative and do good. Globally.

My work is a medley of emotions and mediums, mostly reflecting on other creative works that have inspired me such as poetry, or my own journey through identity. As an Americana, I have been at the crosshairs of identity my whole life. Born in the US to an immigrant family, I have Mexican, Spanish, and Jewish roots. I've also spent many years overseas in Latin America, Africa, and SE Asia.

Some of my work reflects my foundation in tauromaquia - bullfighting art - these were my first works alongside my father. We'd spend weekends in Mexico at the local corridas de toros or charreadas, then come home and paint what we experienced. It is how I learned to paint with deep color, intensity, expressive movement, and extreme detail. He'd call bullfighting the ultimate art - the battle between movement, perfection, and a dance with death. Any deviation from a calculated strategy of form, and the matador would become the victim. It was life, love, death, art, and spirit. Although in my adult years I've come to recognize the ethical dilemma in bullfighting - it is nonetheless a part of my past, so I own that experience while I've moved forward in how I express my new versions of life, love, death, art, and spirit. You might see this background bleeding into my recurring use of alizarin crimson, gold, and ochre. Likewise, a lot of my work will be based on causes that gripe me (and humanity). Issues that touch our lives, and especially those that are globally resounding, such as equal rights, climate change, access to clean air, food, and water, labor issues, conflict and peace, and diversity.

My most recent work is a recollection of experiences - physical, cultural, and emotional. I am working on a feminist collection (mostly oil on canvas): Mujer, misunderstood, that will represent historical, mythological, and everyday womxn I've encountered around the world. My goal is to redefine perceptions. Whereas some of my oil works might be a long, highly detailed, and thought-out process, my 'abstract' work tends to be on a whim,  the work of immediate inspiration that requires immediate expression. I refuse to label my conceptual approaches - stylistically I'm inspired by my father, by the democratic work of Siqueiros, and Gustav Klimt's secessionist movement. I'm drawn to artists disrupting norms, whether Frida Kahlo or contemporary abstract artists of Latino-America.

Of course, being creative doesn't stop there for me. I love working with interior design, fashion, and even landscaping. I believe my creative spirit is a part of what has furthered all of my 'other' professional work, such as strategy consulting and sustainability practices. Art is my family legacy. I hope you find some inspiration in one or several of my many facets of work!

Crista Casas (b. 1987) trained under the tutelage of her father, Mexican artist Mario Casas Dominguez (1945-2002), throughout her childhood and more prominently, during his last years of life. Since then, she continued self-taught, with the exception of a semester at the Academy of Art University which she attended remotely while deployed to Iraq.

Crista's professional interests and career have ranged from studying International Relations and Near Eastern Art and Archaeology at the University of California-Berkeley, to managing fitness training teams, organizational change management, non-profit management in national and international disaster response, firefighting, and launching tech startup operations in emerging markets. She also served eleven years in the United States Marine Corps reserves.

Over the last few years, she pursued and attained her Master in Business Administration degree, while also becoming part-time faculty at the George Washington University, where she teaches Business Ethics and Public Policy. Her identity, experiences, and travel abroad, where she experienced cultural, ethical, equality, diversity, and climate issues together with her political and business interests drew her to starting a consulting startup for tech companies looking to enter emerging markets responsibly. At the same time, now living back in the United States, she decided to express her experiences and issues she fights for creatively, which drew her back to painting.

Crista currently lives in Southern Pines, North Carolina with her partner. Together they split their time between their home in Alexandria, Virginia and their other homes, (or wherever their business and service takes them around the globe) which Crista ha also remodeled to artistically showcase their history melded with modern creativity.
